Show up and make a difference
Aloha Friends,

This is just a short note to ask you to please set aside the time to attend and vote at tomorrow's, Feb. 19, Democratic Caucus's that will be held all around our island and our state.

Though you must be a Democrat to participate, you can sign up at the Caucus location itself.

Your participation is important. Please, please, please take the time to participate in the process.

I am supporting the candidacy of Senator Barack Obama. If you care to read about the reasons behind my choice you can read an editorial describing the thoughts and reasons behind that decision here; http://www.kauaiworld.com/articles/2008/02/18/opinion/edit02.txt

If you have never participated in the Democratic Caucus process before that is ok. All are welcome.

Visit http://my.barackobama.com/page/content/hilookup to find out where you should go to cast your Caucus vote.

Voting begins at 7PM but you must go early as there may be crowds and some confusion at certain locations because of the large numbers of people expected to turn-out. If you are going to be registering as a Democrat at the same time it is even more important to go early.

This is important. Please show up and make a difference.

aloha gary,
mahalo for your involvement and inspiration to engage us at greater levels. please accept this as feedback for improvements for the next caucus. overall there has been much excitement and a better job of getting the word out about the caucus from state dem officials. last time with kerry claiming the nomination the caucus announcements came late and infrequently. this year with it still being undecided who would represent the party there has been keen interest and enthusiasm for increased participation. information has been made available for weeks now and tonight's numbers will indicate significant response to the party's call for action.

personally, i am disappointed that i did not participate due to professional obligations(teaching a class at KCC) and wonder if the party would consider alternative means for increased participation? whether it's online or extended polling hours or perhaps something as radical as having a presidential primary and to allow the polling places to be open all day long. i believe some small modifications to the process could result in favorable outcomes by growing the number of youths and independents active within the party. increasing the number of new registered voters should be a party priority and the caucus/primary process could be an integral vehicle for that pursuit.

i hope this does not come across as sour grapes because i chose to participate at work tonight instead of exercising my democratic privilege and help select our next president. i wish only to encourage the leadership of the state democratic to consider the alternatives and reflect on how improving the process and system will benefit our state, country and world.

mahalo again for your service and commitment to kauai and her people.

respectfully,

jimmy trujillo

Thanks for the note Jimmy. I will pass your thoughts and suggestions on to those active in trying to grow and manage the Party. As you probably are aware, change can only come as more people get involved "hands on". The reality is that the work is done by a very small group of people, most of whom like you have other obligations to work and family. Keeping the Caucus locations open longer and/or having a proper Primary are good suggestions but the Party resources in terms of $ and people are very limited. We need to get more people active and involved...to spread the work and benefit from the combined synergy that will result. Sorry you missed the Caucus...was a good night for Democrats...and a good night for Democracy overall. gh
